‘I’ve Got My Eye On You!’ by Kathleen Richards | Ink | 1926
A very cheeky puss is illustrated by a talented hand in this wonderful original 1920s comical sketch, drawn in ink in a style a little reminiscent of early Louis Wain. A splash of colour is added with the nose and poking-out tongue, which have been highlighted in pinkish-red watercolour.
The sketch is signed ‘Kathleen Richards, Penheagle, Oct 15th /26’, which raises a bit of a mystery. Penheagle may be an old district of St Ives, Cornwall, which we can only find mentioned in a nineteenth century volume of The English Counties Delineated by Thomas Moule; certainly there are several Kathleen Richards in the census records for Cornwall at the time who might be the artist. Alternatively, Penheagle might be the name of a house or estate elsewhere, but we leave further investigation to the interests of the new owner.
