‘Frolics!’ by J H Dowd | Children’s Illustration | 1934
J H Dowd was well known for his fluid, expressive illustration, and in this wonderful example of his work he turns his talents to kittens. This sheet of playful sketches, entitled ‘Frolics!’, comes from a 1934 edition of his book Important People, which was first published by Country Life in 1930.
This print has been professionally mounted with quality pH neutral materials and is ready to give as a gift or place into your choice of 10″ x 12″ frame. As with all antique and vintage prints from Thrilled Kitty, this item is guaranteed to be a genuine historical piece and not a modern copy or reproduction.
About the Artist:
James Henry Dowd (1884-1956) was an English draughtsman, etcher and painter, and is described as “one of the early pioneers of the vital expressive line that seems to be part of the subject rather than illustrating it.” He designed posters for the London Underground and contributed regularly to The Daily Graphic and Punch Magazine. He was also the first illustrator of Winnie-the-Pooh with a Christmas story commissioned by The Evening News in 1925. He is best known, though, for his children’s illustrations, of which several volumes were published in the 1930s.
Condition Report: This print is in good condition, with no foxing or marking evident on the heavy cream-toned paper. There is a degree of tanning at the right-hand edge, but the deep red mount colour helps make this less noticeable. Bears some very minor creases from the passage of time, but we note nothing that distracts from its overall appearance. The sheet lies flat in the mount.
