George Loveridge & Co. Kitten & Shoe Victorian Brooch | Sterling Silver Hallmarked Birmingham 1883
Important Note (June 2026): This brooch is currently reserved for one of our international customers. Please do not attempt to purchase this item – your transaction will be refunded.
A rare and charming survivor from the late Victorian period, this brooch captures the universal joy of a playful kitten. A real piece of history in which the silversmith has depicted, with remarkably fine detail, both the timeless feline character and the intricacies of ladies’ shoe fashion from almost 150 years ago. The brooch has been crafted with a seamless hollow-cast method making it deceptively light for the size, so it can be comfortably worn on lighter clothing
The reverse bears a full set of hallmarks, including the ‘G.L. & Co.’ maker’s mark for George Loveridge and Company, a Birmingham Assay Office anchor, a Lion Passant standard mark for sterling silver and a date letter (which appears to indicate ‘i’ for 1883). The date letter is a slightly unusual variation: it has been struck with a cut-corner rectangular punch, rather than the oval punch more commonly used in Birmingham for this date.
Approximate Dimensions: 3.9cm x 2.2cm (at the longest/widest point), with a depth of about 8mm.
Condition Report: In good condition, with some tiny dents and marks commensurate with age. On the reverse there is a small hole next to a possible historical repair to the clasp, but the clasp remains firm and securely attached. The brooch has been cleaned with only the lightest touch to retain the original patina. Please remember that, as a soft metal, silver is always liable to show some slight marks and fine scratches from handling when inspected closely, even when brand new.
