Pouncing Cat Brooch | Scandinavian Modernist Silver | 1990s
This sublime and substantial brooch is a beautiful example of modernist (we believe Scandinavian) silverwork, and dates to the mid-1990s. Cast in solid sterling silver, the freedom and athleticism of the feline form in mid-leap is wonderfully captured. There is a smooth and effortless flow to the design, with the gently convex shape of the casting adding to the sense of movement. And measuring over 7.5cm from tail to front paw, with a fine mirror-like shine, it is a bold yet elegant statement piece.
The full set of import hallmarks on the rear (which you will find below and to the right of the larger 925 purity mark) tell something of the history of the piece as it made its way to the UK, with an Edinburgh Assay Office Import Mark (used between 1904-98) and an assay date letter for 1998. We believe that the actual crafting date would be sometime in the mid-1990s.
Approximate Dimensions: 7.5cm x 2.1cm (at the longest/widest point)
Condition Report: In excellent condition, with just the faintest surface marks commensurate with age. The silver has been cleaned and polished by us to a fine bright finish, but please remember that, as a soft metal, silver is always liable to show some slight marks and fine scratches from handling when inspected closely, even when brand new.
Material: Sterling Silver
Marks: Sponsor’s mark (MP enclosed in heart), 925 standard mark, Edinburgh Assay Office Import Mark (1904-98) and date letter for 1998 (Please note: this is our best interpretation of these small hallmarks; they can be very hard to read even under magnification so whilst we are reasonably confident we cannot guarantee perfect accuracy)
