‘Friends’ by Lucy Dawson | Hand Coloured Print | 1946
This originally monochrome illustration has been delicately tinted by a skilled artistic hand to give vividness and depth to Mac’s original. The coat of the snoozing white-socked tabby has been beautifully picked out, while the striking green eyes of her long-haired friend gaze out at the viewer.
We believe that this copy comes from a disbound 1946 printing of Lucy Dawson’s book Neighbours, which was originally published in 1939.
This print has been professionally mounted with quality pH neutral materials and is ready to give as a gift or place into your choice of 8″ x 10″ frame. As with all prints from Thrilled Kitty, this piece is guaranteed to be a vintage or antique work and not a modern copy or reproduction.
About the Artist: Lucy Dawson (1867-1954)
Also known as ‘Mac’, Lucy Dawson is acknowledged as one of the finest dog and cat artists of the early 20th century. Working primarily in charcoal, pastel, and pencil, she wrote and illustrated a number of books in the 1930s, including Dogs as I See Them (1936), Dogs, Rough And Smooth (1937), Lucy Dawson’s Dog Book (1939), and Neighbours (1939). Her work was exhibited at the Royal Institute Galleries in Piccadilly, London, and she was much in demand for commissions, most famously from the Royal Family with their request for a portrait of ‘Dookie’, a favourite corgi.
