Mice in the Grain (Untitled) | Ink, Pencil & Gouache | Victorian

The mice are feasting on the grain again, but from behind stacked sacks the miller’s tabby peeps, planning his strategy… This superb piece is characteristic of the Late Victorian and Early Edwardian illustrative style, and is so finely worked that at first glance it appears to be an engraving. The medium is primarily ink and pencil, with touches of white gouache in places, and the artist has framed the image with a two ink margin lines.

The drawing is untitled and undated, but the artistic style and paper condition suggests a date somewhere between 1885 and perhaps 1920, but we think that circa 1900 is most likely. It is also unsigned, but the ‘GD’ marked on two of the grain sacks may be the artist working his initials into the piece; we can’t be sure of this, and can’t offer a suggestion of who the artist might be, but this is certainly the work of a confident and professional hand.

Condition Report: An original antique artwork in very good condition. Paper is generally good, clean and uncreased. Bears some minor surface marks from the passage of time. A few tiny spots of foxing in the margins and a larger spot of foxing in the centre of the image (just below the middle of the open grain sack), but we note nothing that distracts in any significant way from the artwork. The sheet lies flat in the mount.
