Italian Sorrento Ware Jewellery Box | Inlaid Olive Wood
This beautiful small jewellery box is a particularly fine and romantic example of the craftsmanship for which the Italian town of Sorrento is internationally renowned, and most likely dates to the late twentieth century.
The body of the box is cut from well-seasoned and finely finished olive wood, irresistibly tactile with pleasingly smooth lines. The convex surface of the lid carries a superbly hand-crafted scene made from a variety of inlaid woods. Two cats, tails entwined and one wearing a jaunty pink bow in the style of a 50s Italian starlet, sit on a balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples, framed by the branch of a lemon tree. The quality and attention to detail of the workmanship is exceptional.
The body of the box has a good depth of storage for jewellery or other precious items, and is lined in a rich deep-red velvet.
Width – 10cm (6cm internal)
Length – 10cm (6cm internal)
Height – 5.5cm (3.5cm internal)
Condition Report: In excellent condition throughout. Velvet lining is beautifully fresh and unfaded, hinge is smooth and well aligned. There is a small and very slightly dented veneer crack towards upper left edge of the inlay work about 0.5cm in size which is quite noticeable in good light, but the box is otherwise perfect.
