Description

Solid Brass Trivet or Pot Stand | Good Luck Cat | 1920s

This lovely piece of sand-cast brassware would once have graced an English kitchen range or hearth-side, most likely acting as a pot or kettle stand, and it remains as beautiful and useful today as ever. Tough and sturdy, weighing in at over half a kilogram of solid brass, it has a highly polished surface with a deep patina. It features a smiling cat with a ribbon bow set within a horseshoe bearing the words GOOD LUCK. A flower and leaf motif, depicting four-leafed clovers interspersed with seven diamonds, forms a decorative border of traditional lucky symbols.

This trivet form was popular for some years and seems to have first appeared in the late 1920s; we estimate that this example dates very roughly to that period, although it may be slightly later.

It would make a fine display item for a collector of kitchenalia, but it also remains just as usable as when it was first cast. It is a strong piece that would be quite happy to be put back to daily work in the role it was designed for, in use by the stove or fireside for another generation.

Approximate Dimensions:

Length – 16.5cm
Width – 12.5cm
Height – 3.5cm
Thickness of trivet bed – 0.5cm
Weight – 530g

Condition Report: In good vintage order, with polished top and patinated underside. Gracefully aged reflecting years of use on the range or hearth: superficial pitting and scratches to the surface; some wear of the casting from polishing; some minor dings and signs of heat exposure to base and feet. Rather than being faults these contribute positively to the character of the trivet, however.

This piece has undergone a deep clean with an electrolytic plate to remove old polish and has been re-polished to a good finish ready for use or display, but a good trace of the original patina has been retained.
