‘Smile, Damn You, Smile’ by Bob Wilkin | Postcard | 1930s

“Smile, damn you, smile,” was a comical turn of phrase popular in the early decades of the twentieth century, but this cat is not amused! This eye-catching postcard, probably printed in the 1920s or 1930s, makes a wonderful display piece with its bold and unfaded colours.

The artist is Bob Wilkin, also known for his post-war comic-book illustration work, and the publisher is David Eisner & Son, Ltd. (City Postcards) of London.

This postcard has been professionally mounted with quality pH neutral materials and is ready to give as a gift or place into your choice of 8″ x 10″ frame. In this case we have secured the card with acid-free archival corners so that no adhesive at all touches it. Keeping the image fully visible has meant that these clear corners can be fractionally seen if you look very closely, but we considered this to be an acceptable compromise for conservation reasons. As with all antique and vintage items from Thrilled Kitty, this is guaranteed to be a genuine historical piece and not a modern copy or reproduction.

Condition Report: This vintage card is in very good condition, with no creases, foxing, tanning, or marking evident on the image. Bears some light surface marks from the passage of time but displays very well.
